JAPAN CULTURE AND CUISINE

Itinerary

There are no two ways about it – Japan is nothing short of heaven for serious foodies. From the island of Hokkaido in the north where creamy uni (sea urchin) vies with dairy products for attention, to the city of Fukuoka in the far south, widely recognised as the spiritual home of tonkatsu ramen, the country is replete with gastronomic treats.

Although it doesn’t quite extend to the far extremities of the nation, this journey helps guests pluck select treasures from Japan’s bulging larder. The nexus of the country’s foodie scene, predictably enough, is the capital Tokyo. Here guests can lose themselves in old-school markets and learn soba-making skills at the world famous Tsjukiji fish market before hitting the city’s buzzing neighbourhoods.

Further gastronomic (and cultural) stimulation can be found further south in Kyoto, the country’s stately imperial capital, and the rambunctious city of Osaka, regarded by many as the nation’s most accessible and affordable place for unpretentious culinary abandonment.
